Should Cyclists Pay Road Taxes?
In a comment that might be me “shot” – I agree – Cyclist should pay some type of taxes for the roads they use. The roads need to be built (or added) and maintained, as more people move from cars other forms of transportation where will the money come from for these projects (since most money now comes from gas tax). And of course (there is a poll at the end of the article) 49% of the folks think this dump, or some think that cars should be taxed more. So why do you think you are too special to pay for the roads – if you are a biker an using them, you should pay. And why should motorist pay more to support cyclists. You add more taxes on to the motorist, the people with cars start to leave and then you are out of money. It is a as dumb as using funds for the state from a cigerette tax, then when less people stop smoking you are out money and this foobar.
Representative Wayne Krieger in Oregon thinks they should. He says that with so much money being spent on bike infrastructure in Oregon , that it is time cyclists paid their “fair share.” He told Jonathan Maus of BikePortland:
“This is an opportunity for the bicyclists to start contributing to our roads,” he said. “If you want to have something that everybody is going to use, than everybody needs to contribute to what’s there… if there were not bicycles we wouldn’t need bicycle lanes.”
